New Delhi, April 19: Congress leader Supriya Shrinet has criticized the central government, labeling it as anti-women. She asserted that the Congress party supports reserving one-third of the current Lok Sabha seats for women, but the government opposes this initiative and is attempting to impose redistricting in an undemocratic manner.
In an interview with a news agency, Shrinet expressed her concerns, stating, “It was amusing to see Prime Minister Modi mention Congress 58 times in 29 minutes. Whenever there is division, Congress will stand in their way. Why is PM Modi obstructing women’s reservation and delaying it? We demand that 181 out of the 543 Lok Sabha seats be reserved for women immediately. Congress is ready to fully support this.”
She further questioned the government’s intentions, saying, “The government does not want to provide reservations for women because it would mean reducing seats for men. If they genuinely wanted to, they could have done it. They had a significant majority in 2014 and 2019, yet they introduced the women’s reservation bill in 2023 with conditions attached. We urged them not to impose conditions. The government’s true intention is not to bring about women’s reservation but to enforce redistricting undemocratically, which we will not allow.”
Shrinet also highlighted past reforms, stating, “What reforms has PM Modi implemented in the last 12 years that we oppose? When we introduced GST, you opposed it. When we proposed the Food Security Bill, you opposed it. They cannot claim our initiatives as their own. They have rebranded our zero-balance accounts as Jan Dhan accounts. We stand against anything that undermines the country’s democracy. We will not allow vote theft. During our tenure, Congress expelled 88,000 infiltrators, while only 5,000 have been expelled under the current government.”
She concluded by reminding that the foundation of the women’s reservation being discussed is credited to Congress, which ensured 33 percent reservation for women in Panchayati Raj elections. Today, there are 1.5 million elected women, a legacy of Rajiv Gandhi. “Whenever the government attempts to divide the country, it will face consequences,” she warned.
