New Delhi, May 1: The President of the Delhi BJP, Virendra Sachdeva, accused Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann of once again bringing shame to democracy. He claimed that Mann allegedly arrived at a special one-day session of the Punjab Assembly for Labor Day under the influence of alcohol.
Sachdeva pointed out that Mann’s stumbling entrance and his incoherent speech raised questions about the Assembly Speaker’s role in not intervening. He stated that Mann’s apparent intoxication indicated a lack of confidence in the stability of his own government. This is not the first time Mann has reportedly appeared in a legislative session while intoxicated.
Sachdeva alleged that during his tenure as an MP, Mann also appeared in the Lok Sabha under the influence of alcohol. He remarked, “Today, the way he stumbled into the House and spoke in that condition, he crossed all boundaries of decorum.”
He added that people from Punjab, Delhi, and across the nation are shocked by this behavior and are demanding immediate disciplinary action against Mann from Aam Aadmi Party’s national convenor, Arvind Kejriwal.
Earlier, Punjab BJP President Sunil Jakhar stated in Chandigarh that a breath analyzer test should be conducted before any floor test in the Assembly. This statement came amid chaos in the special session of the Punjab Assembly, where Congress staged a walkout.
Congress accused Chief Minister Mann of arriving inebriated and demanded alcohol tests for all legislators present in the House. In an interview, Jakhar insisted, “Before any floor test, a breath analyzer test should be mandatory. Whether the Chief Minister conducts a floor test or not, a breath analyzer test for leaders in the Punjab Assembly today is essential.”
He also alleged misconduct during the Cabinet meeting held earlier that day. Jakhar claimed, “During the Punjab Cabinet meeting this morning, two ministers were insulted. The language used was extremely objectionable. Not only ministers but also the Chief Secretary faced disrespectful language.”
He emphasized, “If the government arrives in such a state at the Assembly, it is an insult to the institution. The Assembly is the temple of democracy.”
Leader of the Opposition, Pratap Singh Bajwa, also demanded alcohol tests for all legislators following the allegations against Chief Minister Mann. Congress raised concerns about the behavior and condition of members during the proceedings, stating that medical checks are necessary to maintain transparency and accountability.
