Kolkata, September 3 (Daily Kiran) : BJP legislator Sarbari Mukherjee has urged for Jadavpur University to be renamed in honor of Sri Aurobindo. Speaking at an event on Thursday, she emphasized that the institution should reflect the ideals and heritage of its historical founder.
During the event held on the university campus, Mukherjee, who represents the Jadavpur assembly constituency, proposed that the name be changed to “Sri Aurobindo University.” She also called for unity against what she referred to as “anti-national forces.”
Sri Aurobindo served as the first principal of the Bengal National College, which later evolved into Jadavpur University after India’s independence.
This demand emerged during a series of events organized by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the Haripada Bharti Smriti Raksha Samiti. The activities included a march with the national flag, singing “Vande Mataram,” showcasing portraits of renowned scholars, and reciting Vedic mantras.
In her address, Mukherjee stated that recent political developments in West Bengal have given people the opportunity to openly discuss nationalism and oppose Maoist and leftist ideologies. She claimed that different outcomes in recent assembly elections could have led to unrest in the state, asserting that opposition to nationalism would continue to face resistance.
“All Hindus united and raised the flag of victory. If the assembly election results had been slightly different, there would have been a massacre in Jadavpur. I say this responsibly. My words may be misrepresented, and I will face criticism. Criticize me as much as you want. I will say from this platform that if you speak against nationalism, there will be opposition,” she declared.
Reiterating her demand, Mukherjee suggested that a collective petition could be submitted to the state’s higher education department, the Chief Minister, and the Union Education Minister to facilitate the name change.
“We must remain united. The more united we are, the more the anti-national forces will retreat. Let us call from this platform, based on the principles and ideals of the person who founded this university; if necessary, we will submit a collective petition to the higher education department. If needed, we will also approach the Chief Minister and the Union Education Minister to rename Jadavpur University to Aurobindo University. This would be a matter of pride for Jadavpur,” she concluded.
