New Delhi, August 23: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has accused Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav of insulting the Jat community, following a response from Union Minister and Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) leader Jayant Chaudhary to Yadav’s recent ‘chavanni’ remark.
Akhilesh Yadav recently stated, “I don’t know where these people have come from to ally with us (SP). We raised their value from ‘chavanni’ (25 paise) to a full rupee, yet they left us.” This comment was perceived as mocking the RLD president.
In a reaction posted on the social media platform ‘X’, Jayant Chaudhary remarked, “In the political battle, if you had to say something cheap, at least you could have mentioned my name; it wouldn’t have been a problem.” He added, “Targeting the Jat community and claiming that we taught them ‘ABCD’? I have seen this arrogance up close, and I believe such behavior only leads to downfall!”
Speaking to the media, BJP MP Dinesh Sharma stated that if Akhilesh Yadav is referring to Jayant Chaudhary as ‘chavanni’ without naming him, it implies he is insulting the “entire Jat community.” He emphasized, “Chaudhary Charan Singh (Jayant’s grandfather) was not only a major leader for the Jat community but also among farmers. Calling his grandson ‘chavanni’ is an insult to the entire community.”
Dinesh Sharma further noted, “He comes from a family that has nationalism and patriotism in their blood.”
Uttar Pradesh government minister Narendra Kumar Kashyap remarked, “Akhilesh Yadav’s arrogance has now reached its peak. He is insulting RLD leaders and Chaudhary Charan Singh. He is also disrespecting the Jat community.” He insisted, “Since the RLD is a trusted ally of the NDA, all coalition partners stand with the party.” Kashyap warned Yadav, “You (Akhilesh) will face the consequences of insulting the RLD.”
