New Delhi, August 16: The Congress party’s social media head, Supriya Shrinate, has found herself embroiled in controversy ahead of the 80th Independence Day celebrations. She shared two old videos on social media, alleging that BJP leaders hoisted their party flag instead of the national tricolor. The BJP swiftly refuted these claims, stating that the videos have no connection to Independence Day events.
Shrinate asserted that one video is from Chhattisgarh and the other from West Bengal. In the Chhattisgarh video, she claimed that BJP workers were hoisting the party flag instead of the national flag at the Swami Vivekananda Hall in Kurud, Dhamtari district.
In her post on X, she wrote, “For 53 years, their ancestors boycotted the tricolor – they still do not tire of dishonoring the national flag.” Following her post, the BJP filed an FIR against Shrinate, accusing her of misrepresenting old videos as footage from Independence Day celebrations.
Ajay Chandrakar, a senior BJP leader and former minister in Chhattisgarh, criticized Shrinate harshly. He stated, “Independence Day is a matter of national importance. It is celebrated publicly and privately at both national and international levels. The Congress party has turned this national festival into a means to defame the BJP.”
Chandrakar also mentioned that the BJP organization in Dhamtari has filed an FIR and is demanding action against Mallikarjun Kharge, Jairam Ramesh, Supriya Shrinate, and Pawan Khera. He insisted that immediate action should be taken.
Chandrakar himself hoisted the national flag at the district-level Independence Day ceremony in Dhamtari. It later became clear that the video shared by Shrinate was indeed from the same location but was taken during a BJP event in March 2026, where the party flag was displayed.
Shrinate shared another video making similar accusations, claiming that Arjun Singh, the Minister of Labor and Transport in West Bengal, hoisted the BJP flag instead of the tricolor and labeled him a “traitor.” Investigations revealed that this video was also old and unrelated to Independence Day.
In response, Arjun Singh clarified, “This video is not from an Independence Day event. It was recorded on July 6, 2026, during the inauguration of my office in Barrackpore, which coincided with the birth anniversary of Dr. Syama Prasad Mukherjee.”
He added, “Parties and individuals spreading such false narratives and propaganda should have verified the facts and corrected their mistakes. This is a deeply shameful and condemnable act. I will be taking legal action against those involved in this misinformation.”
