Three Arrested in West Bengal for the Murder of Congress Leader and Son

Kolkata, August 16: In a shocking incident in Nadia district, West Bengal, police have arrested three individuals in connection with the murder of Congress leader Anisur Rahman and his 24-year-old son, Abu Sufiyan. Among those detained is Fatima Bibi, the head of the Haranagar Gram Panchayat, who is affiliated with the Trinamool Congress (TMC).
The incident occurred late Saturday night in the Bethuadahri area of the Nakashipara police station jurisdiction. According to police reports, Anisur Rahman and his son were returning home in their car when assailants opened fire on their vehicle. The attackers then forced the father and son out of the car and assaulted them with sharp weapons. Sources indicate that both victims died at the scene.
Upon receiving news of the incident, police from Nakashipara station arrived promptly and initiated an investigation. In addition to Fatima Bibi, two of her associates, Ali Mandal and Mithun Sheikh, were also arrested. After a medical examination, the trio was presented in court, where police requested their remand.
Local Congress leaders allege that Fatima Bibi’s husband, Jubbar Sheikh, is the main conspirator behind the murders. Jubbar Sheikh is a powerful TMC leader in the area and is currently in judicial custody.
The Nadia district Congress has stated that following the recent assembly elections, where the TMC suffered a significant defeat, Congress has been emerging as the main opposition party in the state. Anisur Rahman and his son played a crucial role in this effort.
A local Congress leader remarked, “Anisur and his son were working hard to restore our party as the main opposition. This made them a target for local TMC leadership, particularly Fatima Bibi and her imprisoned husband. Jubbar Sheikh has been involved in criminal and anti-social activities, but no one anticipated it would escalate to this level. This was not merely a murder; the brutality with which they were killed sends a chilling message.”
In response to the murders, the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee observed a ‘Black Day’ across the state. State president Shubhankar Sarkar and former president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury have called for a swift investigation and severe punishment for the culprits.
