Mangaluru, August 16: A complaint has been lodged against Congress Parliamentary Party President Sonia Gandhi at the Urwa police station in Mangaluru, Karnataka. This follows an incident on August 15, where Gandhi allegedly disrespected the national song ‘Vande Mataram‘ during a flag hoisting ceremony at the Congress headquarters in Delhi.
BJP leader Vikas Puttur, accompanied by party workers, submitted the complaint to the police. He claimed that during the event, which Gandhi attended, she requested to halt the rendition of ‘Vande Mataram’. Puttur accused her of showing disrespect to the national song, which was being presented in accordance with protocol.
“This act appears to be a deliberate attempt to disrupt peace and is an insult to our national song,” Puttur stated. He urged immediate legal action against Gandhi, citing violations under Section 3 of the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, along with Sections 195 and 352 of the Indian Penal Code.
Puttur warned that if an FIR is not registered, he would file a private complaint in the High Court. He emphasized that any disrespect towards the national song or national honor should invoke legal consequences. He also requested the police to ensure that there is no political interference in this matter.
In his complaint, Puttur expressed, “I hold my country, India, in high regard and have always respected its flag, national symbols, anthems, songs, culture, traditions, and values. ‘Vande Mataram’, composed by freedom fighter Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay in 1896, played a crucial role in the freedom struggle and is recognized as the national song. It deserves the same respect and honor as our national anthem ‘Jana Gana Mana’. Every Indian citizen has a duty to uphold its dignity.”
