BJP Candidate Sanat Sardar Triumphs Over TMCs Jharna Sardar in Sandeshkhali

Kolkata, May 5: In a closely watched electoral battle in West Bengal’s Sandeshkhali assembly constituency, BJP candidate Sanat Sardar has emerged victorious, defeating TMC’s Jharna Sardar by a margin of 17,510 votes.

Sanat Sardar secured a total of 107,189 votes, while Jharna Sardar received 89,679 votes. The CPI(M) candidate, Rabindranath Mahata, finished third with 12,921 votes.

As the results were announced, celebrations erupted among Sanat Sardar’s supporters, who expressed their joy with fireworks and congratulatory messages.

Sandeshkhali, now a prominent political seat in West Bengal, was once part of the Bashirhat Lok Sabha constituency. This reserved seat has been part of the electoral landscape since 1951 and has been reserved for Scheduled Tribes since 2011. The CPI(M) dominated this constituency for decades, winning eight consecutive elections from 1977 to 2011. However, the TMC broke this streak in 2016 when Sukumar Mahata achieved a significant victory. The TMC retained the seat in 2021 as well.

Over the past decade, the BJP has rapidly strengthened its foothold in this region. The party’s vote share increased from about 11% in 2011 to over 35% in 2021, allowing it to secure the second position. Traditionally, voter turnout in Sandeshkhali has been high, but recent years have seen a decline. The turnout, which exceeded 87% in 2016, dropped to approximately 82% in 2024.

In 2011, CPI(M) candidate Nirapada Sardar won against the TMC, while Sukumar Mahata defeated Nirapada Sardar by a significant margin in 2016. Sukumar Mahata also emerged victorious in 2021, with the BJP’s Sardar coming in second.
