Arrah, June 23: The Bharat Tiwari encounter case in Bhojpur district, Bihar, has taken a new turn. Days after Tiwari’s death in the encounter, an FIR has been filed against police officials and personnel at Shahpur police station based on a complaint from his mother.
The FIR names Jagdishpur’s SDPO (DSP) Rajesh Sharma and the then Shahpur station chief Rajesh Malakar as accused. Other police personnel present during the encounter have also been implicated.
From the outset, Tiwari’s family, local residents, and various political parties have questioned the police’s actions. The controversy has intensified, prompting Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary to order an investigation by a retired High Court judge.
On Monday, the FIR filed by the deceased’s mother, Asha Devi, included serious allegations. According to her application, on the morning of June 17, a police team led by the DSP and the station chief arrived at their home and took Bharat Tiwari to an area designated for flood-displaced individuals.
Asha Devi claims that her son was actively raising issues in that area through Facebook Live. The FIR alleges that upon reaching the location, Tiwari surrendered by throwing down his weapon. Despite this, police personnel reportedly pushed him into a pit and opened fire.
The mother alleges that her son was shot five times, leading to his death. The application also claims that Tiwari’s father, Kashinath Tiwari, was detained at the Shahpur police station for two days.
Based on the mother’s complaint, the police have registered a case under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Inspector Sanjeev Kumar has been assigned to investigate the matter.
It is noteworthy that following the encounter, the then Shahpur station chief Rajesh Malakar and four other police personnel had already been suspended. With the filing of the murder FIR, public attention is now focused on the investigation agencies for a fair inquiry and action against the guilty.
