Khagaria, August 9: In a significant crackdown, police in Khagaria district, Bihar, have arrested a man for allegedly impersonating an IAS officer and defrauding people. The suspect, identified as Manish Kumar, also known as Manish Kumar Gupta, hails from the Jamalpur market area of the Gogari police station.
According to police reports, the accused maintained an air of authority by displaying ‘Government of India’ and IAS-related signage on his personal vehicles. Superintendent of Police Bhanu Pratap Singh revealed that the police received a tip-off about Gupta’s long-standing deception, which extended beyond Khagaria to other districts in Bihar. Following verification of the information, a police team conducted a raid at his residence.
During questioning, Gupta attempted to claim affiliation with the Central Vigilance Commission and even asserted that he was a secret agent for National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. However, police found these claims to be fraudulent. They recovered an identification card that falsely identified him as an IAS officer. The raid also yielded approximately 31 liters of foreign liquor, which included various international brands.
Additionally, police confiscated two antlers from a deer, which falls under serious offenses related to wildlife protection laws. They also seized a Tesla vehicle, prominently displaying a ‘Government of India’ sign. The Tesla model is equipped with advanced driving assistance features, although it is not fully autonomous. A Tata Safari vehicle was also recovered, similarly marked with ‘Government of India’ signage.
Further investigations revealed that Gupta possessed five Apple mobile phones, two laptops, 20 credit cards from various banks, eight debit cards, and four checkbooks. The police are currently examining the seized items and documents.
Superintendent Singh stated that an evaluation of Gupta’s assets and income sources is underway. Given the financial complexities of the case, assistance from the Economic Offenses Unit will be sought. Authorities suspect that Gupta acquired wealth through deception and alleged corrupt activities.
Reports indicate that Gupta may have assets not only in Bihar but also in other states and abroad. However, these claims are still under verification. The Superintendent noted that as the investigation progresses, more facts may emerge. He emphasized that the case extends beyond mere impersonation, involving financial transactions and property-related inquiries.
Police have indicated that further arrests may occur as the investigation continues, with legal actions being pursued against the suspect.
