Patna, May 2: Despite a decade-long prohibition on alcohol in Bihar, the illegal liquor trade remains a significant challenge.
In a recent operation, police in East Champaran seized a large quantity of spirit and a vehicle allegedly used for producing illegal alcohol. This action took place during a routine vehicle inspection in the Mehsi police station area.
Authorities stopped a Bolero vehicle and discovered approximately 200 liters of spirit stored in around ten buckets and plastic containers. Officials suspect this shipment was intended for illegal alcohol production.
The seized vehicle has been taken into custody, and inquiries are ongoing with individuals present at the scene. Police believe this operation may be linked to a broader, organized network involved in the production and supply of illegal alcohol in the region.
This crackdown comes in response to recent fatalities from consuming counterfeit alcohol in East Champaran, prompting the administration to be on high alert. In early April, a toxic liquor tragedy claimed the lives of over 15 individuals.
Following this incident, police have intensified raids, surveillance, and vehicle inspections throughout the district to curb illegal activities. East Champaran’s Superintendent of Police, Swarn Prabhat, has issued strict directives to all station officers, emphasizing a zero-tolerance approach to violations of the prohibition law.
He instructed officers to conduct continuous vehicle checks, carry out regular raids in suspicious locations, and maintain vigilant monitoring of dubious activities. Any negligence in enforcing prohibition laws will not be tolerated, he warned.
Police officials stated that operations will be further intensified in the coming days to dismantle the illegal liquor network and prevent accidents related to counterfeit alcohol.
Despite ten years of prohibition, the persistence of the illegal liquor trade highlights ongoing enforcement challenges. Authorities are now focusing on coordinated actions and stringent monitoring to ensure public safety.
