Patna, January 31: The Bihar government has recommended a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the death of a student preparing for NEET, who was found unconscious in a Patna hostel and later passed away. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has urged the central government to ensure a transparent and fair investigation into the case.
Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Samrat Chaudhary shared the update on social media, stating, “Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has requested the Government of India to hand over the investigation of the NEET student’s death in Patna (Case No. 14/26) to the CBI. The probe must be conducted transparently and justly.”
The incident occurred in a girls’ hostel in Patna about two weeks ago. The student, who was preparing for NEET, was found unconscious in her room and was admitted to a private hospital in critical condition, where she later died. The police initially treated the case as a suicide. However, the victim’s family alleges that she was sexually harassed in the hostel and subsequently murdered.
The deceased student was from Shakoorabad police station area in Jehanabad district. The Bihar government formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by a Police Inspector General to look into the matter, with assistance from the CID. Meanwhile, the family has expressed dissatisfaction with the SIT’s investigation, claiming that the police are not pursuing the case properly.
On Friday, the victim’s mother met with Police Director General Vinay Kumar and raised concerns about the investigation, even accusing the police of being corrupt and expressing doubt about receiving justice for her daughter. The case has also stirred political controversy in the state, with opposition parties criticizing the government’s handling of the matter.
