Jammu, March 14: The Ministry of Home Affairs has revoked the detention of Ladakhi climate activist Sonam Wangchuk under the National Security Act (NSA) as of Saturday.
In an official statement, the ministry said, “After deliberation, the government has decided to immediately revoke Sonam Wangchuk’s detention and reaffirms its commitment to providing all necessary measures for the security of Ladakh.”
The ministry explained that Wangchuk was detained on September 26, 2025, following a serious law and order situation that arose in Leh. This action was taken under the provisions of the NSA, based on an order issued by the district magistrate of Leh to maintain public order. Approximately half of the detention period under the act had already elapsed.
The ministry further stated, “The government is actively engaging with various stakeholders and community leaders in Ladakh to address the aspirations and concerns of the local population. However, the current atmosphere of shutdowns and protests has proven detrimental to the peaceful nature of society, severely impacting students, job seekers, businesses, tour operators, and tourists, as well as the overall economy.”
It added, “The government is committed to fostering an environment of peace, stability, and mutual trust in Ladakh, aiming to establish constructive and meaningful dialogue with all stakeholders. The government hopes that issues related to the region will be resolved through constructive cooperation and dialogue, including through high-level committees and other appropriate forums.”
Notably, violence in Ladakh on September 24, 2025, resulted in the deaths of four individuals. This unrest occurred during protests demanding the Sixth Schedule status and statehood for Ladakh, with around 90 people injured during the clashes. Sonam Wangchuk was detained on September 26 on charges of inciting violent protests in the region.
