Bihar Government Approves MSP Purchase for Pulses, Including Lentils

Patna, March 24: The Bihar government has announced that it will now purchase pulses from farmers at the minimum support price (MSP). The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare of the Indian government has granted approval for the purchase of 32,000 metric tons of lentils under the Price Support Scheme (PSS) for the Rabi 2026 season, following a request from the Bihar government.

Agriculture Minister Ramkripal Yadav stated on Tuesday that this is great news for farmers in Bihar. Until now, only rice and wheat were purchased at MSP in the state, but now pulses will also be included. This is a significant achievement for the farmers of Bihar.

He emphasized that this decision is a crucial step toward increasing farmers’ income and promoting pulse production. Under this scheme, lentils will be purchased at MSP, and payments will be made directly to the farmers’ bank accounts.

Minister Yadav expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for this important decision, noting that under his leadership, continuous efforts are being made to enhance farmers’ income and empower the agricultural sector. He also thanked Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan for his support, which will enable Bihar’s farmers to benefit from this scheme and boost pulse production.

He explained that the state government will ensure timely benefits to farmers by establishing purchase centers, registration, storage, and efficient payment systems. The purchase of lentils will commence on the date set by the state government and will last for 60 days. Payments to farmers will be made within three days. He added that this decision will provide fair prices to lentil-producing farmers in Bihar, thereby increasing their income and promoting pulse production.
