Bihar Assembly Erupts Over Chief Ministers Remarks on Women

Patna, February 10: The Bihar Assembly witnessed significant uproar on Monday following remarks made by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who referred to former Chief Minister Rabri Devi as “girl.” Leader of the Opposition Tejashwi Yadav raised objections, highlighting the detrimental effects of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, which can lead individuals to a state of mental instability. He expressed sympathy for those affected, emphasizing the need for understanding and support.

In a social media post, Tejashwi Yadav stated that as dementia and Alzheimer’s progress, individuals may lose their mental faculties, prompting a compassionate wish for their recovery. He questioned the appropriateness of the Chief Minister’s comments towards the state’s first female Chief Minister, criticizing Kumar for repeatedly displaying a narrow-minded and negative attitude towards women. Yadav argued that such remarks contribute to the alarming rates of sexual violence against girls and women in Bihar.

Rabri Devi’s daughter, Rohini Acharya, also criticized Chief Minister Nitish Kumar via a post on X. She accused him of routinely crossing parliamentary decorum, noting that he has used inappropriate language in the assembly and public forums, particularly regarding women. Acharya suggested that when faced with a lack of logical arguments, Kumar resorts to offensive language, revealing his ideological emptiness. She pointed out that his past statements indicate a deep-seated mental and ideological conflict regarding women’s issues, claiming that his comments about women’s respect are merely political posturing.

It is noteworthy that former Chief Minister Rabri Devi has been actively protesting against crimes committed against women in Bihar. During one such demonstration, she demanded the resignations of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Home Minister Samrat Chaudhary, stating that since Chaudhary took office, incidents of violence against women have surged. She asserted that women in Bihar do not feel safe.
