Ranchi, March 13: As the Assam assembly elections approach, the active involvement of Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren has stirred the political landscape in the Northeast. On Thursday, Gaurav Gogoi, the President of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee and Lok Sabha MP, met with Soren at the Chief Minister’s residence in Ranchi. This meeting is seen as a significant step towards potential collaboration and strategic coordination among opposition parties concerning the Assam elections.
Present at the meeting were Bhawar Jitendra Singh, General Secretary of the All India Congress Committee and former Union Minister, along with K. Raju, in charge of the Jharkhand Pradesh Congress. Officially termed a courtesy visit, political circles view it as crucial for the opposition’s strategy regarding the upcoming Assam elections.
Sources indicate that discussions during the meeting covered the forthcoming Assam assembly elections, the implementation of various development schemes in Jharkhand, and current political issues. Initial talks also touched on potential seat-sharing arrangements and electoral alliances between the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and Congress in Assam.
In the past month and a half, Chief Minister Hemant Soren has addressed two major public rallies in Assam. The crowds at the Adivasi Mahasabha rally in Tinsukia district in February and a subsequent gathering in Vishwanath district have bolstered the prospects of a new political equation in the region.
During these events, Soren prominently raised issues concerning the identity, respect, and rights of the tribal community working in tea gardens. The JMM believes that millions of tribal communities from Jharkhand, Odisha, and West Bengal residing in Assam represent a significant political force whose voices have not been adequately heard in mainstream politics. The party is striving to establish its political footing based on this social foundation.
Sudivya Kumar, General Secretary of the JMM and a state minister, stated that the party aims to become a strong voice for the country’s approximately 120 million tribal people. He noted that the support received in Assam indicates a growing hope for political representation among the tribal community. Upon arriving in Ranchi, Gaurav Gogoi informed the media that the Congress leadership has appointed Jharkhand Congress leader Bandhu Tirkey as the senior observer for the Assam assembly elections.
He emphasized that a strategy is being developed to challenge the BJP by establishing better coordination among opposition parties, which includes discussions with leaders from Jharkhand. Overall, the meeting between Congress leaders and Hemant Soren in Ranchi is perceived as a significant indication of a potential strategy for the Assam elections.
