Lucknow, March 13: Dr. Lalji Prasad Nirmal, president of the Ambedkar Mahasabha Trust and member of the Legislative Council, has accused Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav of adopting a double standard regarding Dalit politics.
As the assembly elections approach, Nirmal noted that Yadav has suddenly begun to remember the contributions of the Bahujan leader, Kanshiram. However, during his time in power, he failed to show respect and commitment to Kanshiram’s legacy.
Dr. Nirmal stated that while serving as Chief Minister, Akhilesh Yadav changed the names of several significant institutions and locations associated with Kanshiram. He pointed out that districts, medical colleges, and even universities named after Kanshiram were renamed.
He alleged that the Samajwadi Party government renamed the Arabic-Persian University established in Kanshiram’s honor to Moinuddin Chishti University. Similarly, the Saharanpur Medical College, formerly known as Kanshiram Medical College, was renamed after Mahmoodul Hasan Nadvi. Moreover, the city of Kanshiram Nagar was renamed Kasganj.
With elections nearing, Nirmal criticized Yadav for announcing the celebration of Kanshiram’s birth anniversary as PDA Day to garner votes from the Dalit community. He emphasized that during the Samajwadi Party’s tenure, the Dalit community was consistently neglected.
Dr. Nirmal also alleged that there was injustice against Dalit officials during the Samajwadi Party’s rule. Many Dalit officials were demoted out of vindictiveness, forcing SDM-level officers to work as tehsildars.
He further mentioned that the Samajwadi Party attempted to eliminate crucial issues like reservation in promotions for Dalits. In the party’s politics, respect for Dalits and their rights seems to be overshadowed by concerns for vote banks. Remembering Dalits only during election time is a clear example of political opportunism, he argued.
Dr. Nirmal concluded by stating that the Dalit community has become aware of political theatrics and opportunistic politics and will not be misled by such efforts.
