Kolkata, August 2: West Bengal’s Minister of Municipal Affairs and Urban Development, Agnimitra Paul, announced on Sunday that fines will be imposed for leaving construction materials on roads while building homes. This new regulation will take effect from September 1 in the state.
During her attendance at several events in the Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC), Minister Paul addressed the media, stating that leaving stones, sand, and bricks on the road during construction will no longer be tolerated. “We will impose fines. Keep all materials inside your property. The road is not your private property,” she emphasized.
Paul also mentioned that individuals purchasing vacant land must take responsibility for its cleanliness. She noted that sometimes people build homes 30 years after buying land, during which time the area may become overgrown with bushes, drains, or ponds. “This will no longer be acceptable. Just as you are responsible for keeping your home and garden clean, you must also maintain vacant land. It should not lead to health issues like dengue for residents nearby,” she added.
Recently, Agnimitra Paul sent a strong message against illegal parking. She stated that vehicles must only be parked in designated areas. The state government is also launching a new app for parking in Kolkata and its surroundings. “Anyone parking on sidewalks will face hefty fines,” she warned.
Reiterating her commitment to clear sidewalks, Minister Paul urged all street vendors occupying these spaces to step back and allow pedestrians to walk freely. She assured that no vendors would be removed from their locations until after the Durga Puja festival, as announced by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari.
