Kolkata, March 22: As the upcoming assembly elections in West Bengal approach, senior police officials conducted visits to several police stations on Sunday. Kolkata Police Commissioner Ajay Nand visited the Bhangar police station in the morning.
Commissioner Nand stated that any incidents of electoral fraud or booth capturing during the assembly elections will not be tolerated under any circumstances. The Election Commission is closely monitoring preparations and security arrangements. He reiterated that any complaints related to electoral fraud or booth capturing would be dealt with firmly. Addressing a press conference, he assured that Kolkata Police is fully prepared to ensure peaceful elections. Checkpoints and search operations are being conducted in various areas, with patrolling coordinated with central forces.
Nand further mentioned that additional central forces are expected to arrive before the elections. To assess police readiness in the region, DIG Kankar Prasad Barui of the Presidency Range visited three police stations in the southern suburbs on Sunday.
He inspected the Narendrapur, Sonarpur, and Baruipur police stations and held meetings with officials to review security arrangements in the respective areas. The Baruipur police station, located near Kolkata, oversees several polling booths in rural areas. Officials provided information on specific measures being taken to ensure adequate security at these booths.
Meanwhile, tensions escalated in Bhangar following clashes between ISF and TMC workers over wall space for election campaigning. The incident involved physical altercations, stone-pelting, and vandalism of motorcycles. Central forces were deployed to restore order.
Reports indicate that ISF workers were writing electoral messages on walls in the Kulberia area of Bhangar Block-2 when they were allegedly confronted by TMC members. A heated argument ensued, quickly escalating into a brawl, resulting in injuries on both sides.
The ISF accused that their workers were attacked in the presence of police and claimed that bricks were thrown at their homes and vehicles were vandalized. However, TMC retaliated by accusing ISF of initiating the violence.
Upon receiving the information, officers from the Polarhat police station arrived at the scene with central forces to bring the situation under control.
