New Delhi, August 14: The Bar Council of India (BCI) has directed all state bar councils to suspend the enrollment of any graduates from the 2026 batch of NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad, until further notice. This directive comes in response to a protest campaign initiated by NALSAR students against Chief Justice of India (CJI) Suryakant.
In a letter issued by BCI Chairman and Rajya Sabha MP Manan Mishra, all state bar councils were instructed to refrain from enrolling any student from the 2026 batch of NALSAR University of Law until the BCI provides further instructions.
The protests began when NALSAR students demanded that CJI Suryakant not be invited as the chief guest at the university’s upcoming convocation ceremony. The students are also expressing their dissent regarding certain remarks made by the CJI during court hearings.
The BCI has requested a factual report from the Vice-Chancellor of NALSAR regarding the students involved in the protest and those who supported the campaign to mobilize students against the CJI’s participation in the ceremony.
The BCI’s letter emphasized the need for a report on the facts of the situation and whether there has been any violation of the professional conduct standards set forth under the Advocates Act.
State bar councils have been explicitly instructed to ensure that no student from NALSAR University of Law’s 2026 batch is enrolled until further notice from the BCI.
The letter from Manan Mishra stated that the BCI serves as the regulatory body for legal education and cannot remain a bystander in such matters. The council has also sought necessary information from NALSAR administration regarding the students involved in the protests and their supporters.
The BCI will decide on further actions based on the reports and facts received.
