BCCI Secretary Considers Expanding Womens Premier League Teams
BCCIs Devjeet Sakiya discusses plans to increase team numbers in the Womens Premier League to enhance opportunities for players.

Kochi, October 29 (Daily Kiran) : The Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Devjeet Sakiya, announced that there are plans to increase the number of teams in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) starting next year. This statement follows the WPL 2027 auction held in Kochi, where around 150 players were up for bidding. Ultimately, 25 cricketers secured spots across five teams.
The inaugural WPL began in 2023 with five franchises, and the next season is scheduled to take place from January 14 to February 7. In a video posted on the WPL’s social media channels, Sakiya noted the significant number of players vying for a place in the league. He remarked, “We had to select only 27 players, but many talented athletes were left out. Given the number of cricketers, five teams are indeed insufficient. Therefore, we will certainly consider increasing the number of teams next year and also focus on other areas for improvement.”
Sakiya emphasized that the league is not only about players but also involves coaches, selectors, and various stakeholders. With just five franchises, the WPL currently represents only a fraction of India’s burgeoning pool of domestic talent. Adding one or two more teams and increasing player budgets could provide more opportunities for athletes to participate in the league.
He expressed optimism about the WPL’s impact on the broader cricket ecosystem, stating, “The WPL has a positive effect on the entire ecosystem. It is a fantastic start, and I believe the league will progress rapidly in the coming years.”
Sakiya also highlighted the selection of 15-year-old uncapped all-rounder Uma Kashvi by Delhi Capitals for 1 million rupees, calling it a significant achievement. He stated, “I am thrilled that a young girl has the opportunity to play in the league. This is a success. We want to bring as many female cricketers as possible into the fold and be part of this success story in Indian women’s cricket.”
He concluded by acknowledging the WPL’s vital role in advancing women’s cricket in India, noting, “We are currently the champions in the ODI format, which showcases how much the WPL has expanded women’s cricket across the country. Following the IPL, the WPL is one of the major leagues in franchise cricket worldwide. Looking at our success over the past four years, we have come a long way, and we are now dominant in women’s cricket. The league has indeed played a significant role in the success of Indian women’s cricket.”
