Tripura Launches Its First Tea Auction Center to Boost Local Industry
Tripuras first tea auction center opens in Agartala, enhancing marketing for local producers and reducing reliance on external markets.

Agartala, October 29 (Daily Kiran) : Agartala welcomed a significant development on Thursday with the inauguration of the state’s first tea auction center by Chief Minister Manik Saha. This facility positions Tripura as the second state in the Northeast, following Assam, and the fifth in India to establish such a center.
Samir Ranjan Ghosh, Chairman of the Tripura Tea Development Corporation Limited (TTDCL), explained that the new auction center aims to enhance the marketing network for Tripura’s tea, reduce transportation costs, and expedite the sale process for producers, enabling them to secure competitive prices for their crops.
The inauguration ceremony took place at the Pandit Nehru Complex in Gurkhabasti, attended by the state’s Minister of Industry and Commerce, Santan Chakma. The foundation for the tea auction center was laid in March 2024 as part of efforts to strengthen the local tea industry and improve marketing facilities for producers.
Currently, Tripura is home to 54 large tea estates and about 2,800 small tea growers, collectively producing approximately 9 to 10 million kilograms of tea annually. Until now, the state has relied heavily on auction centers outside Tripura for marketing a significant portion of its tea, with around 60% of production sold through these external facilities.
The establishment of the new center is expected to provide tea producers with more direct access to buyers, increase marketing opportunities for small growers, and shorten the time taken to sell tea. Ghosh noted that selling a batch of tea currently takes about 44 days, but the new facility could reduce this time by nearly 40%.
To ensure the successful operation of the center, TTDCL has engaged in discussions with buyers and brokerage firms from Kolkata and Guwahati to encourage their participation in the Agartala tea auction. Interest has already been shown by several prominent brokerage firms and buyers from different parts of the country.
The participation of buyers and brokers will be crucial for ensuring competitive bidding, strengthening market relationships, and expanding the reach of Tripura tea, which has traditionally depended on external trade centers for a large part of its sales.
This new facility is anticipated to improve coordination among tea producers, traders, and buyers, offering a more accessible platform for marketing locally produced tea. However, the long-term effectiveness of the auction center will rely on sustained buyer participation, competitive bidding, and reduced marketing time and transportation costs, ultimately benefiting tea producers.
Rajesh Kumar Das, Managing Director of TTDCL, described the event as a significant moment for the state’s tea industry and its stakeholders, including producers, manufacturers, leaf factory operators, tea estate owners, laborers, and traders. He emphasized that the establishment of the Agartala tea auction center aims to create a transparent, efficient, and profitable marketing system for stakeholders.
Currently, most of Tripura’s tea is sent to auction markets in Guwahati and West Bengal, leading to additional transportation expenses and marketing costs for producers. The establishment of a local auction center is expected to enhance coordination between sellers and buyers, reduce transportation costs, and allow tea producers and others in the sector to receive better prices.
The 54 tea estates in Tripura comprise those operated by the state-run Tripura Tea Development Corporation Limited, cooperative societies, and private owners. Alongside these larger estates, approximately 2,800 small tea producers play a vital role in the state’s tea industry, contributing about 30% to the annual total tea production of around 9 million kilograms.
With over 60% of the state’s tea production currently marketed through auction centers outside Tripura, the importance of developing an effective local auction system is clear. The opening of the Agartala tea auction center marks a crucial step in strengthening the state’s tea marketing infrastructure, reducing dependence on external auction markets, and providing producers with better opportunities for competitive pricing.
This initiative is expected to significantly boost Tripura’s tea industry, bringing major marketing activities closer to producers and fostering a more efficient business environment within the state.
