Afghanistan defeated India 2-1 in the FIFA Under-15 World Cup quarterfinals held in Baku, Azerbaijan, on October 29, 2026.

Baku, October 29 (Daily Kiran) : In a stunning upset, Afghanistan triumphed over India 2-1 in the quarterfinals of the FIFA Under-15 World Cup held in Baku, Azerbaijan, on October 29, 2026. The match took place at the Hovsan Competition Complex, where both teams battled intensely for a spot in the semifinals.

India started strong, creating several scoring opportunities early in the match. However, it was Afghanistan that struck first. In the 15th minute, Mohammad Mustafa capitalized on a cross from Shahzada Sultani, volleying the ball past India’s goalkeeper. Just 12 minutes later, Sultani himself found the net, taking advantage of a defensive error to extend Afghanistan’s lead.

Despite trailing, India fought back in the second half. Nibas Mitei Wahengbam managed to score in the 37th minute, reducing the deficit and igniting hopes of a comeback. However, the Indian side struggled to convert their chances, failing to find the equalizer as time ran out.

India’s aggressive start nearly paid off in the sixth minute when R. Lalremruatafela’s low cross was mismanaged by the Afghan goalkeeper. Unfortunately for India, Victor Lalvampuia could not capitalize on the opportunity. Three minutes later, a through ball intended for Lalvampuia was intercepted by the Afghan goalkeeper, who was quick to react.

Afghanistan’s second goal came from a defensive mishap by India. Under pressure from Khair Mohammad Nazari, Nara Mitei Laushambam made a poor pass that Sultani intercepted. He skillfully maneuvered past Indian defenders to score with a powerful shot into the upper corner of the net.

As the match neared its conclusion, India pushed hard for an equalizer but was unable to break through Afghanistan’s defense. The loss means India will now face Kazakhstan in the semifinals for positions 85 to 88, scheduled for Thursday at 7:45 PM IST. Kazakhstan was defeated by Hungary in their quarterfinal match.
