New Delhi, 7 December. Baseball is one of the most popular sports worldwide. Originally considered an American sport, it has gained popularity in countries like Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, and other Caribbean and Latin American nations. In India, baseball is also rapidly growing in popularity.
The history of baseball is very old. The game evolved from England’s rounders and cricket. Baseball originated from England’s ancient bat-and-ball games. Over time, the rules of baseball were modified, and in the 19th century, it took its modern form in the United States. During the 1840s and 1850s, baseball developed as an organized sport with teams established in New York City and Brooklyn. In 1845, Alexander Cartwright created rules that were widely adopted. According to these rules, bases were set 90 feet apart, innings had three outs, and the field had to be diamond-shaped. By 1866, baseball was regarded as the national pastime. In 1869, the Cincinnati Red Stockings became the first fully professional team.
The first World Series between the American League and National League was played in 1903. In Japan, American teachers introduced baseball in the late 19th century, while in Cuba, it has been played since the 1860s.
The excitement and growing popularity of baseball earned it a place in the Olympics. Baseball was first showcased at the 1904 St. Louis Olympics. It then appeared in the 1912, 1924, 1936, 1952, 1956, 1964, and 1984-1988 Olympics. The sport gained significant popularity during the 1984 Los Angeles and 1988 Seoul Olympics.
Baseball became an official medal sport at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. It continued to be part of the 1996 Atlanta, 2000 Sydney, 2004 Athens, and 2008 Beijing Games. However, in 2005, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) decided to remove baseball from the 2012 London Olympics. This decision was influenced by Major League Baseball’s refusal to release its star players for the event.
Baseball was excluded from the 2012 and 2016 Olympics. It was included again at the Tokyo Olympics due to pressure from Japan but was removed from the Paris Games. Baseball will return in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, likely due to American influence. This comeback on the global stage is exciting news for baseball players and fans alike.

Players like Roger Clemens, Honus Wagner, Stan Musial, Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson, Hank Aaron, Ted Williams, Barry Bonds, Willie Mays, and Babe Ruth have played key roles in popularizing baseball. The sport remains most popular in the United States.
