Afghanistan Captain Penalized for Conduct Violation in ODI Against India

Dubai, June 22: In a thrilling third ODI match between India and Afghanistan held in Chennai, Afghanistan’s captain Hashmatullah Shahidi faced disciplinary action from the ICC for breaching the Level 1 Code of Conduct.

The ICC stated, “Hashmatullah was found to have violated Article 2.10.10 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel. This rule applies when a batsman deliberately damages the pitch or causes avoidable harm.”

As a result, a demerit point has been added to Hashmatullah’s disciplinary record. This incident marks his first offense within a 24-month period.

During the match, after receiving two informal warnings for running on the pitch while batting, Hashmatullah was officially cautioned in the 31st over of Afghanistan’s innings. However, he continued to run on the pitch in the 40th over, leading to a five-run penalty for his team.

In terms of match performance, India secured a significant victory by nine wickets, thanks to a remarkable five-wicket haul from fast bowler Prasidh Krishna and an outstanding unbeaten century from Yashasvi Jaiswal.

Batting first, Afghanistan was bowled out for 218 runs in 44.2 overs. Hashmatullah Shahidi scored 102 runs off 131 balls, hitting 14 boundaries, while Azmatullah Omarzai contributed 50 runs. Prasidh Krishna was the standout bowler for India, claiming five wickets.

In response, Team India chased down the target in just 28.4 overs. Rohit Sharma, alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal, formed a formidable opening partnership of 170 runs. Rohit scored 79 runs before being dismissed, while Jaiswal finished with an unbeaten 110, guiding the team to an easy victory alongside Shreyas Iyer, who scored 20 not out.
