New Delhi, August 16: Bangladesh has achieved a remarkable victory against Australia in the first Test match, marking a significant milestone in their cricketing history. Chasing a target of 57 runs, Bangladesh successfully reached the goal with just one wicket lost. This victory represents Bangladesh’s first Test win on Australian soil.
The match took place at the Marrara Cricket Ground in Darwin, where Bangladesh defeated Australia by 9 wickets. This win is now recorded as Bangladesh’s second-largest victory in terms of wickets in Test cricket. Their largest win came against Pakistan in 2024, where they triumphed by 10 wickets.
This victory is only Bangladesh’s second Test win against major cricketing nations, including England, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. Their previous win against Australia in Test cricket was in 2017.
Notably, Bangladesh has become the first Asian team to secure a win on Australian soil with the fewest matches played, achieving this feat in just their third Test match. In comparison, Pakistan needed 7 matches, India took 12, and Sri Lanka, despite playing 15 matches, has yet to win in Australia. This loss marks the first time in 31 years that an Asian team, other than India, has defeated Australia at home.
Fast bowler Hasan Mahmud delivered an outstanding performance, claiming a total of 9 wickets in the match, earning him the title of ‘Player of the Match.’ In the first innings, he took 6 wickets, restricting Australia to just 198 runs. In response, Bangladesh scored 426 runs, establishing a substantial lead of 228 runs. Despite Cameron Green’s century (109 runs) in the second innings, Australia was all out for 284 runs, setting a target of 57 runs for Bangladesh, who achieved it with ease, losing only one wicket.
