Kolkata, September 3: The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for heavy rainfall in eight districts of West Bengal over the next 24 hours. This warning comes amid ongoing heavy rains in the region.
According to the Regional Meteorological Centre in Kolkata, districts including Kolkata, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly, Nadia, East Bardhaman, and Birbhum are expected to experience significant rainfall. Winds may reach speeds of 30-40 km/h in some areas, and continuous thunderstorms are likely during the warning period.
Rainfall began in Kolkata and surrounding areas early Thursday morning, with widespread thunderstorms anticipated throughout the day. Heavy rainfall is also expected in several southern districts, raising concerns about flooding in low-lying areas.
Kolkata recorded a minimum temperature of 25.5 degrees Celsius, which is 0.8 degrees below normal. The maximum temperature on Wednesday was 2.9 degrees lower than usual, with 78.2 mm of rainfall recorded in the city.
The weather department has indicated a possibility of heavy rain in Birbhum and Murshidabad districts on Thursday. While the intensity of rain in South Bengal may decrease slightly on Friday, sporadic thunderstorms are expected to continue. Weather conditions in the southern districts may deteriorate again starting Monday.
Meanwhile, northern Bengal has been experiencing heavy rainfall for several days. The situation is expected to remain similar in districts such as Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, and Cooch Behar on Thursday. Heavy rain is forecasted for Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Cooch Behar, and North Dinajpur, while Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar may face extremely heavy rainfall in the coming days.
The weather department stated that heavy rain is also likely on Friday in Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar, and Alipurduar, with persistent heavy rainfall expected in Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar over the next few days.
