Dhaka, February 22: The Bangladesh Election Commission has made a significant announcement regarding the by-elections for Bogura-6 and Sherpur-3. The elections are scheduled to take place on April 14, 2026.

According to Bangladeshi media outlet ‘The Daily Star’, the Commission is awaiting Parliament’s decision on amendments related to party nominations for mayoral posts in the upcoming local government and city corporation elections.

Election Commissioner Abdur Rahmanel Masood stated during a media interaction that the Commission aims to meet this timeline due to the frequent storms and heavy rainfall that occur in the first month of Baishakh. He expressed hope that the polling will be completed before these weather conditions arise.

Regarding reserved seats for women, Masood mentioned that the process has already begun, as these elections are determined by nominations from parliamentary parties. He added, “By this time, they may have already started. It must be completed formally within 90 days of taking oath, and we will ensure that.”

In response to inquiries about the announcement of the reserved seats schedule, he stated, “This will be announced within 90 days. There is still time, and since the parties are nominating candidates, we will formally announce it.”

Additionally, concerning postal ballots, Masood confirmed that they have already been dispatched for Sherpur-3. For Bogura-6, ballots will be resent to those who are currently outside the country. Regarding the timing of the local government elections, he noted, “As far as I know, the ordinance has canceled the provision for voting with party symbols in local government elections. Parliament will convene. If the bill or ordinance is approved, it will proceed accordingly. If it is changed or reverted to the previous situation, that will be different. We are just waiting for the parliamentary session.”

On the elections for the two city corporations in Dhaka, he said, “We are now looking towards Parliament. Once their opinion and decision on this ordinance are clear, the elections will take place.”
