Ayodhya Launches First Skill Development Center for Water Life Mission

Ayodhya, May 9: Ayodhya has emerged as a unique model for the effective implementation of the Water Life Mission and skill development. The state’s first Skill Development Center, established under the Water Life Mission, is providing practical training to artisans linked to the mission.

So far, over 550 artisans have been trained, including women. This center, set up by the Uttar Pradesh Jal Nigam (Rural) at the Mujjafarpur-Jalalpur drinking water scheme site in the Rudauali development block, is the first of its kind. The center’s location within an active drinking water scheme offers trainees both theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience in a real work environment. Training is provided in trades such as fitting, plumbing, masonry, and electrical work.

Key topics include advanced techniques in pipe fitting and alignment, plumbing installation, leak control, masonry work for overhead tanks and other structures, safety practices, and quality standards. To date, 22 training batches have been completed, each with 25 participants. More than 550 artisans have been trained, including 10 women.

The benefits of these trained artisans extend beyond Ayodhya to the water life mission projects in Sultanpur and Deoria districts. This initiative has positively impacted the quality of work at project sites. Standardization in pipe jointing has reduced leak incidents, improved finishing in masonry work, and fostered a culture of using safety equipment.

The availability of a locally trained workforce has reduced reliance on external labor and accelerated project timelines. In the long term, the most significant contributions are being made in the operations and maintenance sector.

Proper installation and quality work are leading to reduced maintenance costs, increased asset lifespan, and enhanced reliability of the water supply system, supporting the mission’s core objective of “water from tap to every home.” A noteworthy aspect of the center is its promotion of women’s participation. So far, 10 women have been trained as pump operators and deployed in various drinking water schemes in Ayodhya. These female operators are efficiently managing the water supply systems in their villages.

Local residents, especially women, have welcomed this initiative, as the presence of female operators has increased both the continuity and reliability of water supply. Arvind Yadav, Executive Engineer of Jal Nigam Ayodhya (Rural), stated that this center is not just a training program but a solid initiative to create a skilled, safety-conscious, and self-reliant workforce in rural areas.

With women’s participation, we are truly making the Water Life Mission a mission for everyone. This skill development center in Ayodhya has become an excellent example of strengthening the Water Life Mission while enhancing quality, safety, and local empowerment. Plans are in place to run more batches in the future to further strengthen this model.
