Australian Open Shock: Elena Rybakina Upsets Iga Swiatek in Quarterfinals

Melbourne witnessed a major upset in the 2026 Australian Open quarterfinals as Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina defeated world number two Iga Swiatek in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1, to knock her out of the tournament. The match, held at Rod Laver Arena, saw Rybakina’s powerful and precise play shatter Swiatek’s hopes of securing a career Grand Slam title.

The encounter between Swiatek and Rybakina lasted 93 minutes, marking their 12th meeting on the professional circuit. Both players struggled to maintain service hold in the early games, resulting in multiple breaks. However, Rybakina managed to stay composed at crucial moments, clinching the first set 7-5 with a decisive advantage.

The momentum shifted dramatically after the first set. Rybakina adopted an aggressive approach in the second set, leaving Swiatek with no room for a comeback. Winning eight of the last nine games, Rybakina took full control and sealed the match comfortably. With this victory, Rybakina leveled their head-to-head record at 6-6.

Service played a key role in the outcome. Swiatek’s first serve success rate was only 49 percent, a weakness Rybakina exploited consistently. Notably, Rybakina came back from 0-40 down in the first set and then lost just 12 points across her next eight service games, showcasing remarkable resilience and focus.

Since October, Rybakina has won 18 of her last 19 matches. This win marks her eighth consecutive victory over a top-10 ranked player, underlining her strong form.

The 2022 Wimbledon champion will now face the winner of the semifinal clash between Amanda Anisimova and Jessica Pegula. Rybakina aims to secure her place in the third Grand Slam final of her career.
