Mumbai, March 18: Indian cinema enthusiasts in Australia have a reason to celebrate. The second edition of the National Indian Film Festival (NIFFA) commenced on Wednesday. The festival began with the red-carpet premiere of ‘Boong,’ the first Indian film to win a BAFTA award.
This film tells the heartfelt story of a young boy named Boong, who embarks on a journey to find his father alongside his best friend. The grand launch event was hosted by the Mayor of Greater Geelong. The Greater Geelong City and the Geelong Waterfront Film Foundation played a crucial role in making this event a success. The festival will run from March 18 to July 5, featuring film screenings, special events, and in-depth discussions related to the film industry across Australia.
NIFFA is not only promoting Indian cinema but also serves as an important medium for bringing Indian culture and stories to a new generation in Australia. During the festival, audiences will have the opportunity to enjoy a mix of new and classic films.
This year, NIFFA will tour major Australian cities including Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth. Additionally, it aims to reach remote areas like Broken Hill and Alice Springs, ensuring that more audiences can experience Indian cinema. A highlight of the festival is the recognition of actor Anupam Kher, who received the ‘International Indian Cinema Icon Award.’ Throughout his decades-long career, Kher has appeared in numerous international films, including ‘The Big Sick,’ ‘Bend It Like Beckham,’ and ‘Silver Linings Playbook.’
Expressing his joy over the honor, Anupam Kher stated, “I feel very honored to receive the ‘International Indian Cinema Icon Award’ at the National Indian Film Festival in Australia. Australia has always held a special place in my heart. From my first visit and film shoot years ago to being part of the jury for the AACTA Awards chaired by Russell Crowe, I have always felt a warmth from the people here and a genuine curiosity about Indian stories and culture. Therefore, receiving this award from NIFFA is a great joy for me.”
He further added, “Such festivals build cultural bridges and take cinema beyond language, borders, and communities.”
