New Delhi, August 8: The Australian High Commission celebrated National Handloom Day on Friday by donning traditional Indian attire alongside its mission staff in India. Sharing a photo on the social media platform ‘X’, Australia’s High Commissioner to India, Philip Green, emphasized that India’s handloom sector showcases the country’s remarkable cultural diversity and exquisite craftsmanship.
He stated, “From vibrant weaves to centuries-old traditions, India’s handloom sector reflects the nation’s splendid cultural diversity and artistry. On National Handloom Day, we honor the skilled weavers and artisans of India by wearing beautiful Indian textiles.”
Additionally, American singer Mary Millben also shared a photo in celebration of National Handloom Day. In the image, she is seen wearing a saree alongside India’s Ambassador to the Netherlands, Kumar Tuhin, and Vijay Chauthaiwale, in charge of the BJP’s foreign department.
Millben described handloom as India’s “timeless heritage,” highlighting its role as a strong foundation for rural empowerment, which supports millions of textile businesses run by women in India.
She wrote, “I honor National Handloom Day with my friend Prime Minister Narendra Modi and my beloved India. This invaluable heritage is a strong pillar of rural empowerment and represents millions of textile businesses led by women in India. The soul of India resides in every hand that weaves, in every fabric that blooms, and in every color that shines. This beautiful tradition, which I wear with love, is the identity of a great people and a great nation.”
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his wishes on National Handloom Day, paying tribute to the generations of weavers and artisans who have preserved the country’s traditional arts and crafts.
In his message on social media platform ‘X’, the Prime Minister said, “Today, on National Handloom Day, we celebrate India’s rich and vibrant handloom heritage. We also salute the talent, creativity, and dedication of our weavers and artisans. For generations, they have cherished and enriched our traditions.”
He added, “Our government will continue to support the handloom sector, as it is a crucial foundation for rural empowerment, women-led development, and the dream of an Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India). I encourage everyone to share their favorite handloom products and videos with the hashtag National Handloom Day. This will motivate those associated with this sector.”
