New Delhi, August 8: The National Capital Region (NCR) has experienced heavy rainfall, leading to multiple incidents reported by the Delhi Fire Department. Since late Thursday night, officials have confirmed nine house collapses and at least 16 fallen trees.
According to the fire department, reports of entire homes or parts of residential structures collapsing have been received since midnight.
In addition, incidents of 16 fallen trees have been recorded across various parts of Delhi.
Officials reported that in one house collapse, three women were trapped inside. They were rescued with the assistance of the fire department.
Continuous rainfall in Delhi and the surrounding NCR on Friday provided relief from the heat and humidity, but it also caused flooding and disrupted traffic in several areas.
After several days of hot and humid weather, the southwest monsoon has once again made its presence felt in the national capital and nearby regions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Delhi-NCR as heavy rainfall continues in many parts of the area.
In South Delhi’s Durga Vihar, persistent rain has led to flooding, while heavy rainfall on Devli Road has also caused inundation. In the neighboring city of Noida, severe flooding occurred in the Sector 95 underpass, where an ambulance became stranded in deep water beneath the Mahamaya Flyover.
Besides flooding, traffic jams have been reported on several major routes in Delhi, including the Mehrauli-Badarpur Road, ITO, Wazirabad Road, Patel Road, Rohtak Road, Shankar Road, Kirti Nagar area, Delhi-Jaipur Highway, Peeragarhi, and Shaheen Bagh.
The IMD stated that the heavy rainfall is due to a rare combination of several active weather systems in northern India. The department has warned that intense monsoon rains could lead to flooding, traffic disruptions, and local inundation, especially in low-lying areas.
