Panipat, August 8: Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his warm wishes to the nation on National Handloom Day, honoring India’s rich handloom tradition and the artisans who have preserved this craft for generations. He urged citizens to embrace handloom products, which has ignited enthusiasm among handloom businesses across the country.
Weavers in Panipat expressed their joy over PM Modi’s call to celebrate National Handloom Day and adopt handloom products. In conversations, they noted a shift in their business practices, stating that they previously imported goods from China but are now exporting their products as well.
Anuj Goyal, a local businessman, expressed gratitude towards PM Modi, saying, “He has dedicated a day to us. To celebrate, we are offering a 50% discount on purchases at our markets and associated stores.” He mentioned that their sales typically increase before Raksha Bandhan, making the timing of the Prime Minister’s appeal even more significant. Goyal highlighted the positive changes in their business since the government’s push for local products.
He also emphasized the need for skill centers in the country, stating that enhanced skills would lead to improved product quality.
In Varanasi, weavers noted that PM Modi’s appeal would naturally have a positive impact on their business, potentially increasing demand. Meeting this rising demand poses challenges, but the government’s interest in the sector benefits artisans and businesses of all sizes.
One weaver mentioned that with PM Modi’s support, they expect to gain recognition both domestically and internationally, aiding their retail ventures. He noted that while handwoven sarees used to take considerable time to produce, the introduction of machines has significantly increased production efficiency.
In Bhagalpur, a special event was organized at the Weaver Service Center to mark National Handloom Day, where students from a government polytechnic college showcased handloom silk garments in a ramp walk. One student remarked, “This is a great initiative. We should celebrate this day joyfully and work towards the development and progress of the handloom industry.”
