New Delhi, August 8: The central government has issued a notification announcing the appointment of 30 lawyers and judicial officers as judges and additional judges in the Madras, Calcutta, Karnataka, and Madhya Pradesh High Courts.
In a post on the social media platform X, Union Law and Justice Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal stated that the President has approved these appointments after consulting with the Chief Justice of India (CJI).
He expressed, “Utilizing the powers granted by the Constitution of India and after consulting with the Chief Justice, the President is pleased to appoint these lawyers/judicial officers as judges/additional judges in the High Courts.”
According to the government notification, five lawyers—Govindarajan Krishnaswamy, Rajneesh Pathiyil, Ramesh Natarajan, GK Muthukumar, and Ramakrishnan Rajesh Vivekanandan—have been appointed as judges of the Madras High Court. Additionally, ten others have been appointed as additional judges, including lawyers Ravikumar Shankaranarayanan, Dilip Kumar Nagarajan, and Elappan Manoharan. Judicial officers Dr. P Murugan, MD Sumathi, S Elly, C Thirumangal, Shanmugam Karthikeyan, Murugesan Baluchami, and N Gunasekaran are also among the appointees.
Moreover, eight lawyers—Aryak Dutta, Aturoop Banerjee, Sandeep Kumar Dey, Partha Pratim Roy, Sudip Deb, Anuj Singh, Arjun Ray Mukherjee, and Rishad Medora—have been appointed as additional judges in the Calcutta High Court.
Six lawyers have been appointed as additional judges in the Karnataka High Court, including Raghavendra Sitaram Shrivatsa, Hema Kulkarni, Subramanya Rangarav, Vivekanand Thadagawadi Prakash, Pramod Bakkeshwar, and Shanti Bhushan Hombe Gowda. Additionally, lawyer Amit Lahoti has been appointed as an additional judge in the Madhya Pradesh High Court.
These appointments follow recommendations from the Supreme Court Collegium to promote lawyers and judicial officers to the respective High Courts.
