Assam to Introduce Supplementary Exams for Higher Secondary Students

Guwahati, June 23: The President of the Assam State School Education Board (ASSEB), Ramesh Chandra Jain, announced on Tuesday that supplementary examinations for higher secondary (HS) students will be implemented starting from the upcoming academic session. This initiative aims to provide students who fail in certain subjects with an opportunity to improve their performance without wasting an entire academic year.

Speaking to the media, Jain stated that the supplementary exams will be conducted approximately two months after the results of the HS final exams are declared.

This move is designed to mitigate academic losses for students and aligns with the reforms proposed under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

According to the ASSEB President, students who are unable to pass the HS final exams in specific subjects will be eligible to sit for the supplementary exams, allowing them to continue their academic journey without waiting for the next annual examination cycle.

Jain noted that similar systems have already been implemented by various education boards across the country, yielding positive results such as a reduction in dropout rates and providing students with a second chance within the same academic year.

He mentioned that Assam has initiated the process of implementing this reform under the framework of the new education policy (NEP) and claimed that the state will be among the first in the country to introduce such a comprehensive supplementary examination system at the higher secondary level.

The President further stated that arrangements similar to those available for students taking the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) exams will be applied where necessary to ensure a smooth transition to the new system.

This announcement follows the merger of the Assam Secondary Education Board (SEBA) and the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC), resulting in the formation of the unified Assam State School Education Board. Retired IAS officer Jain has been appointed as the first president of the newly formed board.

Educators believe that this initiative will provide students with an additional opportunity to pass their exams and pursue higher education without interruptions, significantly benefiting them. Additionally, it will bring Assam’s school education system closer to the objectives outlined in the National Education Policy.
