Imphal, June 1: The Assam Rifles has initiated several efforts to promote historical awareness and heritage conservation at the Khongjom War Memorial, located in Kakching district, Manipur. These initiatives highlight the importance of preserving the state’s rich cultural and historical heritage.
A spokesperson from the Defense Department stated that, under this initiative, the Assam Rifles conducted a joint inspection of the memorial in coordination with the district administration. This inspection aimed to assess the restoration needs and identify beautification and maintenance measures.
Following the inspection, a historical awareness program was organized to educate students about the 1891 Khongjom War, a significant chapter in Manipur’s history symbolizing valor, sacrifice, and patriotism.
A total of 114 students participated in the program, including 64 NCC cadets, 20 students from Slopeland Higher Secondary School, and 20 students from Assam Rifles Public School, Kakching.
Through interactive sessions and discussions, participants were made aware of the importance of preserving the legacy of Manipuri warriors and understanding the historical significance of the Khongjom War Memorial.
The spokesperson further noted that this initiative culminated on Monday (June 1) with a heritage cleanliness campaign, where Assam Rifles personnel collaborated with students and NCC cadets to clean the memorial premises.
The campaign included pathways, public areas, and surrounding landscapes, contributing to the preservation and beautification of this historic site.
Senior officials of the Assam Rifles stationed in Kakching engaged with participants, emphasizing the importance of understanding the homeland’s history and preserving heritage sites with care, responsibility, and respect. They encouraged the younger generation to take an active role in protecting historical sites and cultural heritage for future generations.
Local residents and visitors praised this initiative, noting that the cleanliness campaign not only enhanced the memorial’s beauty but also fostered a sense of civic responsibility and historical consciousness among the youth.
