Assam Rifles and Army Neutralize 27 IEDs in Manipur, Arrest Militants and Drug Trafficker

Kamjong, October 9 (Daily Kiran) : In a significant operation in Kamjong district, security forces from the Assam Rifles and the Indian Army successfully neutralized 27 improvised explosive devices (IEDs). This joint effort, spanning 48 hours, was based on intelligence and focused on a mountainous route approximately eight kilometers long.

The explosives were discovered concealed in bushes along the Shangkhallok-Pilong road. During this operation, bomb disposal teams utilized special electronic equipment and trained dogs to locate the IEDs safely.

According to a defense spokesperson, this timely action has thwarted attempts to disrupt peace and security in the region. It also ensured the safe movement of local residents in border areas, which are often fraught with security challenges.

The operation is deemed crucial, especially given the proximity of these hilly districts to the international border with Myanmar. In addition to Kamjong, the districts of Churachandpur, Tengnoupal, Chandel, and Ukhrul also share a border with Myanmar, totaling a 398-kilometer stretch without fencing. This lack of barriers raises concerns over illegal cross-border activities.

Furthermore, security forces apprehended three militants linked to banned organizations during various operations. These arrests occurred in separate incidents in the eastern district of Imphal.

In another operation, a 35-year-old suspect named Ngamkhojang Kipgen was arrested in Tuida village, Churachandpur district, on charges of drug trafficking. Authorities allege he was found with 785 grams of brown sugar hidden in 60 soap boxes.

Additionally, a joint team of Manipur police and central security forces conducted a search operation near the Vaishan River in the Wangoi police station area of Imphal West. They recovered a 7.62 mm self-loading rifle, a magazine, a single-barrel breach-loading weapon, nine live cartridges, and three wireless communication sets.

Police officials are currently examining the seized weapons and equipment to identify and dismantle active militant networks in the state. Ongoing operations by central and state security forces aim to combat militancy and other illegal activities across sensitive and mixed-population areas.

These efforts are essential for maintaining peace in a violence-affected state and ensuring the safety of its citizens.
