BJP Secures Both Meerut Seats in UP MLC Elections Amid Counting Chaos

The BJP has won both Meerut seats in the UP MLC elections, while counting faced disruptions in several areas.

Meerut, October 27 (Daily Kiran) : The BJP has successfully retained both Meerut seats in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council elections, signaling its political strength ahead of the 2027 assembly elections. In the teacher’s constituency, Shrichand Sharma defeated the Samajwadi Party’s Nitin Tomar by a margin of 13,241 votes, securing 18,099 votes to Tomar’s 4,858. Meanwhile, in the graduate constituency, Dinesh Goyal triumphed over SP candidate Pramendra Bhati by 12,855 votes, receiving a total of 24,928 votes against Bhati’s 12,073.

The counting process, which began at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, was marred by incidents of unrest in Lucknow and Jhansi. In Varanasi’s teacher constituency, SP candidate Lal Bihari Yadav was leading after the first round of counting. Votes were being counted across seven districts for a total of 11 Legislative Council seats, including those in Lucknow, Varanasi, Agra, and Meerut.

Despite a strong showing from teacher organizations, the main competition remained between the BJP and SP candidates. Supporters of the BJP celebrated victory shortly after the results were announced late at night, while the formal declaration came after administrative checks.

Tensions escalated at the Ramabai Ambedkar rally site in Lucknow around 10 p.m. when some BJP supporters attempted to enter the counting area. SP supporters alleged that police were allowing BJP workers entry without proper checks, leading to a brief commotion. Incidents of minor scuffles also occurred between BJP and SP supporters at the seventh table during the counting of the graduate constituency.

Upon receiving reports of the disturbances, police officials arrived to restore order. The situation was managed effectively, and the counting continued peacefully afterward. In the Allahabad-Jhansi graduate constituency, similar unrest was reported, but police were able to control the situation swiftly.

As counting progresses, all eyes are on the final results, particularly in the Varanasi teacher constituency, where the SP’s Yadav remains in the lead.
