Guwahati, September 22 (Daily Kiran) : Assam police arrested five individuals, including four Bangladeshi nationals and one Indian citizen, on Tuesday in connection with suspected cross-border cattle smuggling. The arrests took place late Monday night in the Badarpur area of the Shribhoomi district.
The Bangladeshi suspects were apprehended in Mahakal village, identified as Rezaul Karim, Sabir Ahmed, Raheel Ahmed, and Hasan Ahmed Tahim, all residents of Zakiganj in Bangladesh’s Sylhet district. Alongside them, Fazal Uddin, an Indian citizen from Jagdishpur village in the Cachar district, was also taken into custody. Authorities suspect Uddin acted as an intermediary in the cattle smuggling operation.
Initial investigations revealed that the four Bangladeshi nationals entered India from the Tukurgra area, located near the international border, and were preparing to transport cattle and buffaloes back to Bangladesh. Following the arrests, officials initiated an inquiry into the alleged route used for crossing the international boundary and are working to determine if the suspects are linked to a larger smuggling network.
Police are currently interrogating the detained individuals to uncover how they crossed into India, who assisted them, and their intentions regarding the cattle. Investigators are also looking into the potential involvement of other individuals in this suspected cross-border operation.
This incident comes at a time when Assam’s security agencies are maintaining heightened surveillance along the state’s international border with Bangladesh, particularly in areas prone to unauthorized crossings and smuggling activities. Authorities stated that the investigation is ongoing, and further actions will be taken based on the findings.
