Guwahati, October 11 (Daily Kiran) : Akhil Gogoi, an MLA from Assam’s Raijor Dal, announced that his hunger strike demanding effective relief for disaster-affected families has reached its ninth day. The movement is now entering its tenth day, and Gogoi declared that large-scale rallies and demonstrations will take place across district headquarters in Assam starting Monday. The goal is to pressure the government into implementing relief measures.
Gogoi expressed strong support for the “Save Democracy” movement initiated by the Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP). He described this movement as a crucial effort to protect democracy in the country. According to him, no political party has managed to mobilize the public in such a way in recent years. He emphasized that this movement aims to safeguard democratic values.
He referred to the current protests as the largest public movement for democracy since the anti-Emergency protests of 1975. Gogoi accused the ruling BJP and RSS of authoritarian policies and called on all democratic organizations and political parties to support the cause.
In his appeal to opposition parties, Gogoi urged them to stand united with the CJP rather than creating parallel movements. He specifically called on leaders such as Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, Arvind Kejriwal, and Yogendra Yadav to join forces in the fight for democracy.
Gogoi also highlighted attempts to arrest three CJP leaders, which were thwarted by the courts. He expressed gratitude to the judiciary for their release, welcoming the freedom of the leaders as well as YouTuber and social influencer Dhruv Rathee.
Addressing the plight of disaster-affected individuals, Gogoi held the state government responsible for the calamity that struck on July 19. He claimed that severe conditions arose in three districts due to issues related to the water resources department and alleged illegal coal mining activities. He reiterated the demand for a CBI investigation into these matters.
The Raijor Dal MLA criticized the government for failing to deliver promised financial aid and additional relief to those affected. He noted that while approximately 200,000 individuals were impacted by the disaster, the government survey included only 55,000 families, leaving many without assistance.
Despite nine days of protests, Gogoi lamented that neither the Chief Minister nor the Chief Secretary has met with the demonstrators. He stated that due to the lack of concrete actions from the government, significant democratic protests will commence at all district headquarters starting Monday. The aim is to apply pressure on the government to implement effective relief and rehabilitation programs for those affected by the disaster.
