Oversight Board Criticizes Meta for Lack of Transparency in Election Rules Enforcement
The Independent Oversight Board calls out Meta for failing to implement transparent election-related rules amid content moderation failures.

New Delhi, October 20 (Daily Kiran) : The Independent Oversight Board has issued a strong critique of Meta, urging the social media giant to enhance transparency and consistency in enforcing election-related rules. This criticism follows several content moderation failures linked to political accounts in the United States and Brazil.
In a statement, the board expressed concern over recurring shortcomings in Meta’s efforts to ensure uniformity during elections. They warned that mistakes in content moderation could suppress legitimate political discourse and erode public trust in electoral processes.
The board highlighted specific instances, such as the removal of accounts associated with the “No Kings” movement in the U.S. and restrictions placed on accounts linked to Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva during the elections. According to the board, these actions have heightened fears of interference in elections.
The oversight body pointed out that Meta’s security measures should have identified the erroneous actions taken against the “No Kings” Instagram account, which were designed to prevent moderation errors. Additionally, they questioned why these accounts were not included in Meta’s “cross-check” program, which subjects the accounts of high-profile citizens and political figures to extra human review before any impactful actions are taken.
The board also criticized Meta’s enforcement of fraud-related policies against advertising accounts linked to Lula during the Brazilian presidential campaign, deeming it a failure. They suggested that such cases should have been escalated to specialist reviewers.
These remarks echo concerns raised by the board following Brazil’s 2022 presidential elections, where they urged Meta to establish clear standards for measuring the effectiveness of its election integrity programs and to publicly share related performance data.
While Meta regularly publishes general statistics, such as the number of archived ads or accounts removed, the board asserts that the company has yet to provide public figures that accurately reflect the effectiveness of its enforcement systems or identify significant shortcomings.
Moreover, the board warned that the improper removal of political content before elections could negatively impact political engagement and undermine electoral integrity. They emphasized that automated enforcement tools must consider language, nuances, and political context to better protect political expression without inciting violence.
In 2025, Meta pledged to reduce moderation errors and allow for greater freedom of expression during elections and political debates. However, the board’s recent observations suggest that more improvements are necessary for the company to fulfill this commitment.
