Assam Elections: Akhil Gogoi Questions Election Commissions Decision

Guwahati, March 15: Akhil Gogoi, the president of the Raijor Dal and an MLA from Sivasagar, has voiced his opposition to the decision to conduct the Assam Assembly elections in a single phase.

He alleges that the Election Commission made this decision under pressure from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Gogoi has also called for a revision of the election schedule.

Speaking to the media, Gogoi stated that the decision to hold elections in one phase was influenced by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. He said, “The Election Commission has decided to conduct the elections in a single phase due to pressure from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. We will not accept this decision.”

Gogoi emphasized that no political party should influence the democratic process. He accused the Election Commission of operating under BJP control.

He demanded that elections in Assam be conducted in three phases instead of one and urged the Commission to reconsider its decision immediately.

During his remarks, Gogoi also commented on the Congress party, stating that his attempts to form an alliance with them before the elections were unsuccessful. He remarked, “My efforts to ally with Congress were in vain.” Gogoi asserted that his party is capable of performing well in the upcoming elections on its own.

Earlier, on Sunday, the Election Commission announced the dates for the Assam Assembly elections. According to the Commission, voting will take place in a single phase. Voting for the 126-member Assam Assembly is scheduled for April 9, with the counting of votes set for May 4.

Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar announced the election dates, stating that the gazette notification will be issued on March 16. The last date for filing nominations is March 23, with scrutiny of nominations on March 24. The final date for candidates to withdraw their nominations is March 26. Voting is scheduled for April 9, and counting will occur on May 4. The election process must be completed before May 6.
