Assam Elections 2026: BJP Set for Victory, Congress Faces Major Setback

New Delhi, March 15: The Election Commission of India announced the dates for assembly elections in Assam, along with three other states and the Union Territory of Puducherry, on Sunday. Voting for Assam’s 126 assembly seats will take place on April 9, with results expected to be declared on May 4.

With the announcement of the elections, the Model Code of Conduct has come into immediate effect across all five states and the Union Territory.

Alongside the election dates, an opinion poll by Matterize has been released, aiming to gauge public sentiment regarding which party will hold the reins of power in the state.

According to the Matterize opinion poll, the BJP is projected to emerge victorious once again, while the oldest political party in the country, Congress, appears to have lost the public’s trust. The poll suggests that the BJP could secure a significant majority in Assam.

The opinion poll estimates that the BJP alliance may win between 96 to 98 seats out of 126 in the assembly. In contrast, the Congress alliance is projected to secure between 26 to 28 seats, with other parties potentially winning 2 to 8 seats.

In terms of vote share, the NDA is expected to receive between 43 to 44 percent, while the Congress alliance is projected to garner 39 to 40 percent, and other parties may receive between 18 to 20 percent.

The term of the 15th Assam Assembly will end on May 20, 2026, making it essential to conduct elections before that date. Assam has a total of 25 million voters, equally split between male and female voters, with 343 voters identifying as third gender. Additionally, there are approximately 575,000 first-time voters aged 18 to 19.
