Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Responds to Gaurav Gogois Jail Remarks

Guwahati, October 3 (Daily Kiran) : Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has fired back at Congress state president Gaurav Gogoi’s recent statement, which suggested that Sarma would face imprisonment if Rahul Gandhi were to become Prime Minister of India. During a press conference on Saturday, Sarma emphasized that electoral discussions should prioritize voter concerns rather than threats of jail time.

Sarma questioned the feasibility of Gogoi’s claim, noting that the next Lok Sabha elections are set for 2029. “How can Rahul Gandhi become Prime Minister right now?” he asked. The Chief Minister pointed out that there are no elections scheduled in the next nine months, demanding clarity on how such a scenario could unfold.

He urged political leaders to focus their campaigns on pressing issues like infrastructure, education, and welfare programs that directly impact the public. Sarma criticized Congress leaders, stating, “Whenever elections approach, Gaurav Gogoi and Rahul Gandhi start talking about jail.”

The CM reiterated that the decision on elections rests with the common voter, emphasizing, “Prisoners in jail do not vote. It’s the general public that casts their ballots.”

Gaurav Gogoi had claimed earlier that if Rahul Gandhi ascended to the Prime Ministership, Sarma would be charged and jailed the following day. This exchange comes amid heightened political activity in Assam, with both the BJP and Congress ramping up their attacks against each other.

The ongoing back-and-forth has brought various political issues to the forefront, with Congress challenging the state government on alleged political and legal matters, while Sarma seeks to redirect the debate toward governance, development, and public welfare.
