Prime Minister Modi Set to Inaugurate Assams Semiconductor Facility in December

Assams semiconductor facility is nearing completion, with PM Modi expected to inaugurate it in December, boosting local employment and technology.

Guwahati, October 3 (Daily Kiran) : Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Saturday that the first clean room for the semiconductor assembly and testing facility in Jagiroad is complete, and pilot chip production has commenced. This marks a significant milestone for the state’s ambitious semiconductor project.

Sarma expressed optimism that Prime Minister Narendra Modi might formally inaugurate the facility in December or January. “I visited the semiconductor facility a few days ago. The clean room is ready, and they have begun producing pilot chips,” he stated.

The facility will feature two clean rooms, with the first one already operational, while construction of the second is ongoing. Sarma highlighted the project as a major achievement under India’s semiconductor mission, asserting that this facility will become the largest semiconductor assembly and testing center in the world.

The development of this facility in Jagiroad, located in Morigaon district, involves an investment of approximately ₹27,000 crore. Once fully operational, it is expected to produce up to 48 million semiconductor chips per day.

Advanced semiconductor packaging technologies, including wire bonding, flip chip, and integrated system packaging, will be utilized at the site. The chips produced here are anticipated to meet the demands of various sectors, including automobiles, electric vehicles, communications, and consumer electronics.

Sarma indicated that many prominent personalities from across the country are expected to attend the formal inauguration. The project received approval in February 2024 under the “India Semiconductor Mission” and is viewed as a crucial component in establishing India’s domestic semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem.

The central government has identified this facility as the country’s first indigenous semiconductor assembly and testing unit, aiming to cater to both Indian and global market needs. Beyond strengthening Assam’s industrial base, the project is expected to create extensive employment opportunities in the region.

Government estimates suggest that this facility and its associated ecosystem could generate around 27,000 direct and indirect jobs. This development is seen as a significant step towards Assam’s aspirations to emerge as a technology and advanced manufacturing hub in the Northeast.
