Assam and Mizoram Authorities Seize ₹46.25 Crore in Drugs, Five Traffickers Arrested

Assam and Mizoram authorities have seized drugs worth ₹46.25 crore and arrested five traffickers in two major operations.

Silchar, Aizawl, November 1 (Daily Kiran) : The Assam Rifles have made significant strides against drug trafficking in Assam and Mizoram, seizing drugs valued at approximately ₹46.25 crore in two separate operations. Five traffickers were apprehended during these actions.

In total, authorities recovered 27.813 kilograms of methamphetamine tablets, commonly known as Yaba or party drugs. This substance, a mixture of methamphetamine and caffeine, is often referred to as a “crazy drug.” It is banned in India and is smuggled from Myanmar into the northeastern states.

According to a defense spokesperson, a joint operation with the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) in southern Assam led to the seizure of around 20 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine from Dholai Market in Cachar district, with an estimated value of ₹40 crore. This seizure is considered one of the largest in the region, significantly impacting organized synthetic drug trafficking networks.

Based on intelligence reports, security forces intercepted the suspected shipment and arrested three traffickers. During the search, 20 packets of crystal methamphetamine were discovered, alongside three mobile phones and two vehicles.

Initial investigations revealed that this shipment originated from the neighboring state of Mizoram and was intended to pass through Silchar as a transit hub for distribution to other parts of the country. The arrested traffickers and the seized items have been handed over to the DRI in Silchar for further investigation and legal proceedings.

In a separate operation, the Assam Rifles also confiscated 7.813 kilograms of methamphetamine tablets in the Ramthar North area of Aizawl, Mizoram, valued at around ₹6.25 crore. Two individuals were arrested in this case, and the seized drugs, along with the suspects, have been transferred to the Mizoram police for legal action under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act of 1985.

The Assam Rifles stated that these successful operations demonstrate their commitment to combating drug trafficking and highlight the effectiveness of collaboration and intelligence sharing among various agencies.
