Glenn Maxwell Retires from International Cricket After Stellar 14-Year Career

Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell announces retirement from international cricket, leaving behind a memorable legacy.

New Delhi, November 3 (Daily Kiran) : Australian cricket star Glenn Maxwell has officially announced his retirement from all formats of international cricket, bringing an impressive 14-year career to a close. The announcement came late Monday night, marking the end of an era for the 38-year-old all-rounder. Despite stepping away from international play, Maxwell will continue to participate in league cricket.

Maxwell began his international journey on August 25, 2012, with a One Day International (ODI) match against Afghanistan in Sharjah. He made his T20 debut later that year in September against Pakistan, and his Test career kicked off in March 2013 against India.

Throughout his career, Maxwell played just seven Test matches, scoring 339 runs with one century and taking eight wickets. However, his ODI and T20 records are significantly more extensive and successful. He played his final ODI on March 4, 2025, against India, finishing with 3,990 runs from 149 matches, including four centuries and 23 half-centuries. His highest score in ODIs was an unbeaten 201 runs, along with 77 wickets.

In T20s, Maxwell played his last match on February 20, 2026. He is recognized as one of Australia’s most successful T20 players, amassing 2,897 runs in 130 matches, featuring five centuries and 12 half-centuries, while also taking 51 wickets.

Maxwell was known as a match-winner for Australia, often turning games in his team’s favor with both bat and ball. One of the most memorable performances of his career came during the 2023 ODI World Cup against Afghanistan. Chasing a target of 292 runs, Australia found themselves in dire straits at 91 for seven. However, Maxwell, alongside captain Pat Cummins, forged a remarkable partnership, scoring an unbeaten 202 runs together. Maxwell’s innings of 201 runs off 128 balls, which included ten sixes and 21 fours, led Australia to a thrilling three-wicket victory. This performance is regarded as one of the greatest in cricket history and will be remembered by fans for years to come.

Maxwell was part of the Australian teams that won the ODI World Cup in 2015 and 2023, as well as the T20 World Cup in 2021. His contributions to the sport have left an indelible mark, inspiring future generations of cricketers.
