Ashwin Believes Kohli Still Had Test Cricket Left in Him

New Delhi, March 21: Virat Kohli shocked cricket fans and critics alike by retiring from Test cricket before last year’s tour of England. Many believed he still had the capability to play. Former spinner R. Ashwin shares this sentiment, stating that Kohli had more Test cricket left in him.

On his YouTube channel, Ashwin remarked, “I’ve told him directly that he still has cricket left in him for Test matches. But honestly, it’s okay. There’s a problem with the mindset in India.”

The veteran spinner added, “He has retired. This should also be viewed from Kohli’s perspective. He has always prioritized the team. He has consistently stated that the team is crucial, and we need to win. The decision to retire is his, but I am confident that he had some cricket left.”

Kohli faced challenges during the 2024-25 tour of Australia, where his weakness outside off-stump was exposed. In an effort to regain form, he participated in the Ranji Trophy, hoping to bounce back, but he struggled to score runs. With rising expectations and the pressure of the spotlight, Kohli decided to step away from Test cricket, marking a sudden end to a remarkable chapter. He amassed 9,230 runs in 123 Tests, including 30 centuries and 31 half-centuries, with a highest score of 254. Kohli also had an impressive record as captain, leading India to become one of the strongest teams in Test cricket.

R. Ashwin was a long-time teammate of Kohli in the Test squad. He also retired from cricket midway through the 2024 tour of Australia.

The manner in which Ashwin, Kohli, and Rohit Sharma exited Test cricket has raised questions about the Indian management. Many believe these three players still had much to contribute to the format.
