Heat Alert Issued in Tamil Nadu as Temperatures Rise

Chennai, March 21: As temperatures continue to soar in Chennai and various parts of Tamil Nadu, the Directorate of Public Health (DPH) has issued a warning urging residents to take precautions against heat-related illnesses.

Health officials recommend that individuals stay hydrated, avoid outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours, and be vigilant for early warning signs of heat-related conditions to prevent complications.

Symptoms can range from mild issues like skin rashes and muscle cramps to more severe conditions such as heat exhaustion and life-threatening heat strokes.

The advisory also notes that if temperatures persist significantly above normal levels or approach 45 degrees Celsius, the risks will increase.

Vulnerable groups, including the elderly, children, outdoor workers, and those with pre-existing health issues, are particularly at risk in such conditions.

In anticipation of a seasonal spike in cases, government hospitals across the state have ramped up preparations. Officials have ensured the availability of sufficient beds, essential medications, oral rehydration salts (ORS), fluids, and cooling equipment.

Ambulance services at hospitals have also been strengthened, and dedicated beds have been reserved in primary health centers, district hospitals, and medical college hospitals for effective management of heat-related illnesses.

Dr. A. Somasundaram, the Director of Public Health, stated that officials have been directed to implement a comprehensive heat management action plan, intensify public awareness campaigns, and strengthen healthcare infrastructure at all levels.

He emphasized that uninterrupted power supply is crucial for maintaining cooling systems in hospitals, while promoting long-term initiatives like better ventilation and cool-roof technologies.

Dr. K. Shantharaman, Dean of Rajiv Gandhi General Hospital, stressed the importance of early intervention. He advised the public to seek immediate medical assistance if they experience symptoms such as dizziness, high fever, or confusion, as timely treatment can prevent complications.

The health department has also issued guidelines for organizers of public gatherings and outdoor events, mandating the provision of adequate drinking water, shaded areas, and on-site medical assistance to ensure public safety during the ongoing heatwave.
